New RN Super Union Adopts Name: National Nurses United

August 26, 2009

On February 18, 2009, the leaders of the National Nurses Organizing Committee/California Nurses Association, United American Nurses and Massachusetts Nurses Association announced that their three organizations would be merged into one.  At that time, the press release stated that the new organization would be called the United American Nurses-National Nurse Organizing Committee (AFL-CIO).

However, on August 25, 2009, these same groups announced a different name for the merged entity: National Nurses United.  The press release also confirmed that this new merged organization will hold their first convention December 7th and 8th in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Arlen Specter now says, “I will support a cloture vote on EFCA.”

August 14, 2009

The on-again, off-again battle over passage of the Employee Free Choice Act suddenly is on-again after Arlen Specter has reversed himself once again. Today, he has announced that he would vote for “cloture” in the Senate.  With the Democrats holding a solid majority in the Senate, the only hope to block the Employee Forced Choice Act would be a Republican filibuster.  Specter’s promise to vote for cloture would cut off the debate and send the bill to President Obama’s desk – where it would be signed into law.
